Kailpodh is one of the three main festivals celebrated by the Kodavas with Kaveri Sankramana and Puttari being the others. Kailpodh and Puttari are associated with paddy cultivation while Kaveri Sankramana celebrates the birth of river Kaveri.
Shivaratri, Yugadi and Vishu Sankramana are also celebrated by Kodavas but they are typical Hindu festivals and are celebrated in other parts of India as well. Besides these, there are festivals celebrated in every naad and ooru (group of villages and village respectively) for the village deity. While the major elements of the Kodava festivals mentioned above are the same in all parts of Kodagu, there are some variances in the way certain festivals are celebrated in different areas.
