Cheshire Homes Pollibetta, Kodagu
The Cheshire project started in 2000 with the support of Volunteers, its Day Centre, for Children with Disabilities and extended its services to all Persons with Disabilities for Vocational training. Then through its Out Reach Program CHIC started its Community Based Rehabilitation Program in 38 Villages to reach out to a larger number and provide comprehensive rehabilitation services. The 15 Committee members, Volunteers and the staff have been the striving force of the Organization for the past 13 years.
Vision:The vision of this Centre has been to ” make a difference in the lives of Persons with disability”, so services were extended from education, to therapy, vocational training and Community Based Rehabilitation in 38 villages of Kodagu District where it worked with over 950 people with disabilities and their families.
Mission: To create a conducive environment and empower Persons with Disability (PWDS) and their families.
Cheshire’s continuous efforts to fulfil this mission are carried using these primary wings:
The Day Centre
Provide special educational support and functional academics to children with disabilities in Kodagu. Children are provided with preparatory support and included in mainstream schools where ever possible;
The Sahaya Vocational Centre
Provide students, pre-vocational and vocational training in the sheltered workshop mode. Here products like phenyl and liquid soap are manufactured for institutions and orders are taken for tailored, embroidered, knitted, crochet and paper products.
The Orthotic & Prosthetic Unit
Started in June 2010 and is the only unit in Kodagu. Individuals with disabilities have been trained as Ortho-technicians at APD, Bangalore to run the unit. They manufacture and repair various assistive devices for people with disabilities in Kodagu, based on the orders received.
The Sanitary Towel Unit
Started in November 2010. In this short time period, manufacturing and sales have started and this unit strives to reach out and assist women from low income groups to take care of their personal hygiene.
The Sukh Shanti Community Based Rehabilitation Program.
Started in 2004 and the project has been working in 38 villages of Kodagu providing rehabilitation services to over 950 people of all disabilities and their families.
The main focus areas are: .
- Education: – To produce a conducive environment and educational facilities for Children with Disabilities.
· Health: To improve functional abilities and health of Persons with Disability and increase their access to health services.
· Economic Empowerment: To improve the economic conditions of Persons with Disability and their families by enhancing their skills and providing livelihood opportunities and micro finance.
· Advocacy & Campaigning: To advocate disability related issues and to influence policy makers to provide schemes and services for Persons with Disability.
· Empowering Persons with Disability & their families: To empower Persons with Disability and their families through Community Organizations, for Advocacy, social participation and Community Based Rehabilitation program management.
· Resource Agency: Cheshire Home Coorg will be developed as a Resource Agency on disability for the District
