The special dishes prepared on this day are tambuttu and sweet rice payasa. Before the feast starts the head of the family asks the others “Polud kondonga?” meaning “Shall we partake of the pollud?” or “Shall we eat the bountiful rice that we have been blessed with?”. When all respond saying “Yes”, they start to eat, commencing with the elakki puttu. Some rice grains from the new ears of paddy that were cut that day are added to the rice used in preparing the payasa.
