It is quite heartening to know of the existence of an old age home in Kodagu taking care of some of our deserving and needy seniors with dignity, respect and compassion. Sri Ramakrishna Residential Care Home was started in 1998 by a group of likeminded social workers under the leadership of Mr. M W Kalappa. It was named so because of the proximity to Sri Ramakrishna Sharadashrama in Ponnampet and is not part of the Sri Ramakrishna mission.

The land to this cause was donated by Mr. Cheppudira P Madaiah, a philanthropist in Ponnampet, in proximity to Sri Ramakrishna Sharadashrama and their hospital, Sri Ramakrishna Sevashrama. The hospital provides treatment free of cost or at concessional rates to various disadvantaged sections including poor senior Citizens, inmates of the Sri Ramakrishna Old Age Care Home, Widows and tribals.

The Residential Care Home is administered by a Board of Trustees, all in honorary capacity and comprises of many prominent personalities in and around the area. The development and expansion of the Home, with emphasis on infrastructure and facilities is the aim of the Board of Trustees. The Home currently has about 25 seniors (all locals and mostly Kodavas) living and several others waiting to get in. However, expansion has been a challenge consider the lack of funds as all expansion has to be funded by donors’ contribution.

The purpose of this initiative was to provide a comfortable and normal life to senior citizens through proper care and companionship. With the younger generation making progress in the fields of education and professional endeavor and hence seeking opportunities outside, the senior citizens often find it difficult to lead a life of solitude and hence seek solace in care homes as this.

Kodava Koota has been actively supporting Sri Rama Krishna Old age home. Kodava Koota in the year 2018-2019 was able to provide solar lights, secure the premises by building a compound wall and fencing around the property. However, there is a lot more work to be done to help the needy to sustain the ongoing cost.

Considering the needs of this institute and after discussions with the Management Team, Kodava Koota Board has decided to meet 50% of the ongoing operational expenses. The monthly expenses incurred by the Home is about INR 35,000 which totals to about $6,500 per year (considering currency fluctuations). Kodava Koota’s share will be about $3,250 per year.
